Who said that the Island of Elba is only sea? One of the best ways to fully enjoy every corner of Elba, from a naturalistic and sporting point of view, is mountain biking.
Cyclists of all levels will find a true paradise on the island of Elba: in fact, with its routes suitable for everyone, it is one of the best national destinations for mountain bike lovers.
Visiting the island on two wheels allows you to admire its views and the multi-faceted landscape: cliffs overlooking the sea, ancient hermitages, small villages, woods and ancient iron mines.
Whether you want to simply get around the village or admire magnificent views with the calm and comfort of a bike, or whether you want to tackle breathtaking technical routes, the saddle of a mountain bike is for you.
Each MTB excursion will be unique and will offer you wonderful colors and views, through various itineraries and paths that are always different, even for the level of difficulty.
Mountain biking is practicable all year round and it is not necessary to have the weather in favor, a little mud or rain will make you have even more fun. Depending on the weather, you will discover a new nature, varying in more or less intense scents and colors, the sea will change from light blue to intense blue and the mountain with a thousand colors of flowers and shades of green to a darker and more mysterious atmosphere.
Riding a MTB you can go practically anywhere, with more than 220 km² of surface available. To choose the routes, we recommend downloading the Trail Forks app, which contains many MTB routes with reviews, maps and all useful information.
Here are some routes recommended by us:
West Elba: this excursion is recommended for expert mountain bikers, as it is a very long and demanding route that from Marina di Campo reaches the village of San Piero and then returns to the starting point. From Marina di Campo, following the signs for Portoferraio and then deviating to Sant'Ilario, continue along a dirt road to Monte Perone. Further on you will find a spring on the tip "Castagnone" and from there you will take the path "Zucca 1" and then the number 7 up to the splendid village of San Piero. From there, return to Marina di Campo.
For beginner mountain bike enthusiasts, on the other hand, we recommend an itinerary that leads from Capoliveri to the Costa dei Gabbiani on Monte Calamita. It is also suitable for beginners, as the road is flat, with a panoramic view of the sea and the Islands of Corsica, Pianosa and Montecristo, and on clear days also of Giglio and Argentario. Along the way you can also see the remains of the old mines and visit the mining museum.
Also of note, on Monte Calamita in Capoliveri, is the Bike Park with 5 routes that wind for more than 100km with tracks of varying difficulty marked with the respective color.
Very interesting is the night excursion organized every Thursday evening from July to September from the Capoliveri Bike Park. It is an excursion open to everyone, beginners and not, and if you do not have a suitable bike, it is possible to rent one: it will be a unique experience, in the moonlight the landscape will seem completely different from how it appears in the sunlight and you will be accompanied by the song of crickets and nocturnal birds of prey.
Finally, for medium-level bikers we recommend the Portoferraio - Colle Reciso - Monte Orello route: the path is about 10 km long, mostly dirt, and can be covered in about an hour and a half. From Portoferraio continue towards Colle Reciso: at the level of the quarries, turn left onto the path that leads to the "Buca di Bomba", the point where the borders of 4 municipalities cross. Continuing you arrive at Monte Orello, which offers various paths immersed in nature: continue past the church of Santa Lucia to the old mill and from there admire the view over the Gulf of Portoferraio.
